StarCraft 2 Beta. Hell, It’s About Time.

No more rumors, no more waiting. The StarCraft 2 beta is here, and we’re all downloading it like mad. In a few hours from now, the net will be flooded with all the information, screenshots, and videos we’ve all been waiting for – and a few lucky thousands will be providing them.

Beta be downloading

Just a couple of hours before the beta was unleashed on the suspecting but unknowing public, the official system requirements page went up on Blizzard’s support page. Only the minimal requirements are up at the moment, and they’re indeed quite minimal. If you’ve purchased a computer with a standard graphics card in the last 5 years, you’ll be just fine.

PC Minimum Requirements:

• Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1/Windows 7
• 2.2 Ghz Pentium IV or equivalent AMD Athlon processor
• 1 GB system RAM/1.5 GB for Vista and Windows 7
• 128 MB NVidia GeForce 6600 GT/ATI Radeon 9800 PRO video card
• 1024×768 minimum display resolution
• 4 GB free hard space (Beta)
• Broadband connection

An attached note informs that these are not final. Also, it mentions that the Mac beta version is not ready yet, but will be available during the beta.

Important note: we’ve been getting reports of many people who have not received any email notification, but have just logged into their Battle.net account and found the following. If you’ve opted-in, don’t wait for a notification!

StarCraft II Beta Available!

I feel cheated, I’ve been supporting Blizzard since 1998 :(

Are invites massed out or going out every minute?

  2. AnnihilatorX — February 17, 2010 @ 3:45 pm

The invites appear to be sent out in waves – I have friends that have received keys during Blizzcon 208 that aren’t in yet, but others have already received invites via other channels.

I predict crime rates will spike a little in the U.S….as i, like many people, would kill to get a beta key…xD

What do people know of a private server for sc2 beta so that pl without keys can play?

I haven’t gotten the email yet and the game’s not appeared on my battle.net game list… I’m so excited, yet so worried at the same time.

It seemed like this day wouldn’t even come, to be honest. Such a long wait for the Starcraft 2 Beta… but it is upon is, like an unholy but ferocious zerg swarm. I’ve got my invite, but do you have yours?

Well, I’m not part of the beta but you can get the rather large client from several official places like FileShack.

I pulled the music and the sounds out of the client; and to be honest I don’t “feel” it. I pretty much thought all the music tracks sucked; I didn’t like any of them. Now it has been a long time since I played SC 1; but I seem to recall liking some of its music; and I listen to WC3 and WOW music fairly frequently. SC2 Music, well I’ve already deleted them…

As for the Sound Effect, their are a couple funny ones; but again I just didn’t “feel” it. They do seem to be very forced. Their are a couple references to movies (Thor kinda sounds like Arnold in the Terminator series), I’m pretty sure one of the marines “pissed” line is a famous line from Duke Nukem. ;-) And their were a couple other “game” references. But all in all; I was not impressed with the music and of course the “pissed” sound effects were all in all pretty lame.

Ah well, I sure hope the game play is a lot better. ;-)

And I’m sure the Single Player will be pretty good, Blizz normally has a very interesting story line. They didn’t have any of the Movies or Sound Effects from the Single player game; just Sound Effects for a good chunk of the multiplayer units. So, no spoilers on the single player game or single player only units.

seriouly, someone know some stuff about a private server? :=)

  16. Newman — April 11, 2010 @ 11:36 am

There will not be private servers for at least several years. Battle.net 2.0 is hard-to-hack, its defense is stronger than steam’s. Funny thing: I got my invitation even though I didn’t have a single game attached to my account. Feel sorry for all you “hardcore” guys.

I have the beta, yet all attempts to use it have failed, I have tried ALL mac/pc VMs, crossover, wine and the rest, all result in the same error. So I’ll bide my time and wait for a mac version to be sent. Kinda thoughtless to send a person who states they own a mac a pc beta :( . ah well.

  18. hodir — April 24, 2010 @ 6:55 pm

cccd – I will gladly take that off your hands. Would you prefer online sexual favors or the standard groveling/begging?

  19. cccd — May 4, 2010 @ 7:54 pm

sorry mate, finally released it for mac, during which the RAM decided to die.
