I agree that the Mothership is now somewhat useless.

"At the heart of each mothership is a huge khaydarin crystal infused with an incredible amount of psionic energy."

Surely the Protoss are more than capable of developing some devastating weapon which can utilize the full potential of that crystal...

I have been quite disappointed.

>Nydus worm... a unit would have been fun, but nw bliz just decided to play it safe... very sad.

>Medivac.. something there tells me it is awkward. I can't exactly nail it, but it doesn't give that 'DxMN! that's cool' feeling at all. In fact, it feels marginally forced and stupid...

>DT... as unified and organized as the protoss, I don't want two DT. If u make one the other's upgrade, then I will still find it alright.

>Mothership... another disappointment, I dont want to see the carrier's role overlapped. Should have gave it a unique role, like a huge support fortress that acts as a shield battery, recharging Protoss shields during combat, and gives some kind of an advantage to toss troops, give it the planet cracker... that was the ONLY attack that fitted the mothership... make that attack a building buster, so people will panic when a mothership approaches base...

so far... most of blizz's decisions.. I came to.. slightly grief. Thor.. Phoenix.. Mothership.. -sigh-

I'm amazed by a lot of the voting. The Mothership as the Capital Ship seems to overshadow the purpose of the original capital ship, the Carrier. The Carrier is the only unit that really deserves to be the Protoss Capital Ship, and a hero-esque unit such as the Mothership really deserves to have a much more unique role.

Also, I don't understand why people would want both Dark Templars to pop out randomly, it would add another layer of unnecessary confusion with the game, the same feeling I got from the Gas Mechanic. I can see the randomness being used in a much more suiting and practical fashion, such as decals on Terran armor and ships, or slight mutations in Zerg units.

Medivacs, I never even realized they were originally planned to be made from bunkers, but I can see why the change was made. But with the change, is there even any point in having the Medivac, like it stated? So high up on the tech tree, most Terran players would have moved out of Medic/Marine by then. Bringing back the infantry medic and giving her jetpacks seems to defeat the Reaper's unique ability. Honestly, I think giving the Nighthawk a deployable healer would be best. Second on my list of solutions is letting the Reapers go alone and keep the medic on the ground with the rest of the infantry. The Reaper, being fairly low on the tech tree, won't have very much opposition when it comes to escaping (except maybe from Stalkers). It could be an effective Terran strategy to put a medic or two on some high ground for injured Reapers to use.

On the Nydus Worm, how high up on the tech will it be? If it's essentially going to be like Protoss Recall (which was almost a game-ending gambit, to me), it has to be in a spot where you can't abuse it too early into the game.

On second review of the Mothership... I realize that it should be HERO unit. Yes that's right a hero unit.

Should the other races get hero units? No. The hero concept matches the protoss race perfectly. It's all about expensive powerful units (in sc1, 1 zealot cost = 4 zergling cost). Thus the next evolution of protoss unit would have to an all powerful unit, the Mothership.

The essence of starcraft is being able to balance different races w/ their unit types of units. Blizzard pulled this off very nicely in sc1.

Zerg    = macro race
Protoss = micro race
Terran  = middle ground

Each race is it's own type of game, sc brings puts the micro vs the macro vs the middle ground.

From this perspective, it looks like the hero unit fits. However it will probably upset the people who like to play the protoss as macro.

The medivac may open some new doors, but I'll surely miss that crazy micro for medic walling or those sick zergling surrounds a la JaeDong, splitting medics and marines...

Also interesting to note is that currently, in Dawn of War 2, the unbeatable strategy is to use Tyranids (Zerg) with the tunneling hero and a certain type of melee unit - creating an insant Zerg swarm just about anywhere on the map and at any point of time.

Excellent writeup as usual.
>Vettl
Pink cotton candy archons are sexy.
I agree, psi storm is a lot weaker than it used to be, but it was pretty over powered in the first place. Just look at Bisu and Jangbi last year!

>On Nydus Worms
From what i hear of the build at blizcon, nydus worms were pretty much impossible to stop (not like recall which just grabs a clump of units, nydus worms put a maxed army in your main!). Perhaps a revert back to the old moving burrowed unit would be more appropriate for testing in beta.

Also, just imagine what boxer could do with a medic which is also a dropship! I can't really talk being, a dirty Toss player, but personally i love the medivac.

What i still dislike is the Archon and PSI Storm. Their visual appeal is boring and has nothing of the feel of SC1. The Archon always seemed heroic and frightening and somehow like a nobel killing machine. The Archon now is nothing. It has not this "woohoo, an Archon" look or feel either and since it has nothing really special or new, it sucks.
And PSI Storm looks very weak too.....I liked the old animation in SC of PSI Storm because you could perfectly distinct which units were under it and which not. Now its...blah
