Is there a unit more defining of the Terran’s mechanized war machine? Today, Blizzard has added an official page for one of the most important units for the Terran race and for the entire game of StarCraft: the Siege Tank.
CRUCIO SIEGE TANK
Builds From: Factory
Armament: Twin 90mm Cannons (assault mode)
120mm Shock Cannon (siege mode)
Role: Armored Support and Mobile Artillery
It’s the StarCraft 2 version of the Siege Tank. No change was really expected for this core unit, but Blizzard has decided to tweak it to better suit the needs of the Terran forces:
The Crucio is the Dominion update of the immensely popular but aging Arclite siege tank. The Arclite was renowned throughout the Confederacy for its devastating firepower and stalwart emplacement/advance tactics.
Although the Arclite was supremely effective in the artillery role, it suffered some shortcomings as a battle tank. It was a superb defensive unit, but in offensive operations it required substantial support to get to a forward emplacement. Enemies would often make strenuous efforts to get close to an emplaced siege tank battery so they could exploit its “deadzone.” If they were successful, this tactic usually meant destruction for the Arclites because even in assault mode the machines were too undergunned and poorly armored to fight off a determined close-range assault.
That’s an accurate description of the StarCraft 1 Arclite Siege Tank. While it was THE weapon of choice for any self-respecting Terran player, the Siege Tank was almost never used in its assault form. The artillery attack more than made up for it, however, putting the emphasis on “siege” instead of “tank” for this unit.
Is this subject to change in StarCraft 2’s Crucio Siege Tank design? The next bit seems to suggest so. The new Siege Tank will cost a little more, be as effective in its artillery mode, but will also function as a real assault tank - something that’s sorely needed in the Terran army.
The Crucio has been designed for increased survivability with an enlarged, reinforced turret and hull. The new turret layout also features an upgraded assault-mode armament package so that the Crucio can fend for itself more successfully in an open battlefield. Force deployment costs for the Crucio have increased over the older Arclite, but the increased versatility of the powerful new siege tank more than compensates for the additional expense.
The Siege Tank has gone through a few changes during development, though mostly artistic ones. The current Siege Tank version has been around for a while and has received positive feedback all around. With Blizzard “officially” putting it up on StarCraft2.com, it seems to have finally received a seal of approval of sorts.

First!
Nice to hear the new tank will actually be useful as a tank. The previous version was a bit depressing to use when not deployed…
I hope it’s not TOO good, though. I don’t want to see hoards of tanks that can only be stopped using air units.
CRUCIO huh? kewl!!!
Does it still say, ” I’m about to drop the hammer and dispense some indiscriminate justice!” ? or how about, “tat tadadata, tat tadadata, tat tadadata…”
If it doesn’t, it sucks!
However good they are against certain units, obviously they will have counters. I’m speculating Protoss Warp Rays, Twilight Archons, cloaked Dark Templar, and the Immortals from the first Gameplay video.
So what is the change ?
Sounds great! Serious changes like these are what make the game starcraft TWO.
AAaah, just a question, why CRUCIO? Is there something “cool” in the name and I don’t know?
Sorry to ask =/
the expected change is shorter fire when assault mode and possibly increased damage as well. No one used siege tank in assault mode for sure. Hopely blizzard made moving shot more easy, too.

Is it me or the demo movie really seems like the shock cannon is a lot weaker. Look how many shots it takes to wipe out 5 rines and 1 med. Try pulling off that tactic in SC1 and see what you get.

I think its normal considering that the medic was the last to die. Each rine was killed by one blast and i think there was one time where 2 rines were killed. Splash damage was not too evident considering the medic heals the damage created by the splash. If it was SC1, the tank would have been gone!
Crucio is more expensive than the Arclite right? does this mean that the effectiveness of FD will diminish? and heavy metal terran may take longer to set-up.
Still, with zealot’s CHARGE, tanks are gonna be raped with less support! I’m not threatened.
The tank looks good. However, I have a question about the reaper. Repears can throw mines that would damage the buildings. What if, 20 repears came up on the back of my base and throw 20 mines at my nexus and destroy it? I’ll have to rebuild a nexus for my probes to start mining again.
Player1: Use a Phase Prism to “Warp In” your forces, and beat back the Reapers before they take out ALL your buildings and Photon Cannons. Also, those mines take a while to detonate. It’s possible that stealth-detecting structures and units can destroy them before they go off, much like SC1’s Spider Mines, and they don’t seem to be able to attack airborne units like the Phase Prism, so the Observer should be safe as well.
If those Reapers are supported by something else, that maybe can detect and destroy air units… well, what were you doing while they made 20 Reapers + support anyway??
I don’t think those reapers C4 is stealth weapon. Defender probably don’t even need detector for it.
Grat player 1,
When reapers throw their “mines”, and you spot them immediately, there is a sufficient amount of time for you to destroy them without all that damage to your workers and Nexus. I bet they’ll be easy to destroy.
They have the same graphic as the Spider Mines from SC1, but that might change at release. Also, the official site calls it “deuterium-eight demolition device, or D-8 charges,” while the Gameplay demo narrator called them Demolition Charges.
Anyways, none of this has anything to do with the Siege Tank, unless one of us brings up that we might possibly use the Reapers to toss their mines at the Siege Mode Tanks. Would the long detonation time allow us to transform back into the Assault Mode and run away, or will our new armor protect us?
Who said the Reaper mines are destroyable?
‘Crucio!’ is also one of the Unforgivable Curses in the Harry Potter series of books. It causes immense pain and is used in torture. But to use it is to risk imprisonment in the wizard jail of Azkaban. Maybe this name suggests that the tank is a pretty nasty piece of work?
don’t you think destroyable mine would be more fun?
Besides the spider mine, everything else in the game was not always accurately detonated all the time.
Like for instance of scarub(Reavers), the small thing do not always do same amount of damage if all.
It’s more fun this way, no?

“Who said the Reaper mines are destroyable?”
Common sense tells me that. Imagine a control group of reapers jumping from your backdoor right to your mineral line, then laying 12 D-8 charges to your Nexus right in front of your eyes and you can’t do anything about it except to kill the reapers and shout in helpless anger to your opponent hoping that he gets run over by a truck.
They have to be destroyable. And they also have to be non-burrowed or non-cloaked. Otherwise, it’s imba.
I guess psonic storm or force field will be the best solution to my question
I didn’t say they shouldn’t be destroyable, just that we don’t know that they are yet. Can you guys ask Karune for us?
don’t you see… they upload new unit presentations of units we’ve sun 5 dozen times before… the BT upload was WORTHLESS, just the same animation as seen so much in vids/screens supported by a few nice invented sci-fi stories.. i guess blizzard was like “damn they put pressure on us… give them something to swallow” - “what do you want to be revealed, sir?” - “well uhmm… dunno… let’s see.. ah, give em the battle tank and add a nice description, that will give us another month of time”

Thank you so much for the explanation ^^
CRUCIO sounds bad…Arclite was something that is awe-inspiring but CRUCIO…sounds like crucial to me…is the tank crucial in the game??? Obviously yes in sc 1. i dun think any terran player can do wifout tanks and at leas 6 of them. ONE WORD- COOL. FOR THE ARTWORK AND GRAPHICS
Thanks !
